PTA Newsletter – October 2020
Dear Parents and Carers
A warm, socially distanced, welcome to new Year 7 and Year 12 parents. I hope that your children are settling in and that the Year 7s are glad to be back in school again!
This has been a very strange start to a school year and it is such a shame that we are not able to run our normal events to meet new parents in person and explain the role of the PTA, but we hope that you find this email useful.
This newsletter, together with our Facebook page, is the PTA’s regular means of communicating with you to let you know what we have lined up for the term ahead. Things will obviously be a bit different this term, but we are still going to try to raise as much as possible! Apologies in advance for the length of this newsletter, but we’ve lots to tell you!
Aside from our social role, the primary function of the PTA is to raise money for the school. I’m delighted to tell you that through your amazing generosity in terms of your time, subscriptions, donated gifts, and money spent at events, we donated £24,200 to the school last academic year, which has been used to the benefit of our children.
Items that we were able to fund include new microscopes for Science, Yamaha keyboards for Music, visualisers for Maths, a blast chiller for the Food Tech room in the new building, equipment to set up a netball club, and online teaching resources for English, MFL and Science. We also funded infrastructure in the new sports hall to enable more cricket practice nets to be installed. It’s an amazing achievement by you all, so a Very Big Thank You from the PTA!
Fundraising – How You Can Help
We are now starting our fundraising for this academic year. This term is usually our busiest where we would raise more than £13,000 through all our events. We sadly won’t be able to host the quiz night and Christmas fair. However, we are up for the challenge of still raising as much as we can, and really hope that you will get behind us in supporting our efforts. Below are the headlines about what is planned and how you can help us continue to raise money to support the school and our children. We would also welcome any other suggestions for ways to raise funds.
The Christmas Raffle
Tickets will shortly go on sale for the much anticipated Christmas Raffle. The draw will take place on 4th December. First prize is an Ipad.
Many of you are very generous with offering gifts for the raffle, so please do email firstname.lastname@example.org if you are able to offer a prize, as we would like the raffle to be bigger and better than last year’s!
This year we have partnered with a company to sell the raffle tickets online, to mitigate the risk of not being able to send and receive paper tickets and collect the cash in the event of further year group lockdowns. Please look out for the email detailing the link. We have to sell the tickets individually, rather than in books of 10, but please do buy your usual amount of tickets (or more!) and share the link with friends and family.
We will be taking advance bookings for Christmas Puddings, provided by renowned supplier The Carved Angel. Details to follow.
We may not be able to run the Christmas fair, but we are still planning on offering our famous hampers this year. Keep an eye out for information about how you can buy them, and our plans for collecting donations.
Online shopping has increased during the current pandemic, and you can raise money for the PTA (at no cost to yourself) whenever you shop on Amazon, and by registering for Easy Fundraising and accessing your usual online retailers via their website. See details below for how to sign up to these. Over the summer we received £42 from purchases made via Smile Amazon, which was a great start, but it would be great to smash this amount when we all start shopping online for Christmas!
Many thanks to everyone who already makes a monthly donation to support the PTA. At a time when we cannot run our normal fundraising events, this income is even more important. If you haven’t yet signed up and would like to, please download the standing order and gift aid form at the foot of this page. Please do remember to tick the Gift Aid box if you are a tax payer, as this generates even more money for us, at no cost to yourself!
Please send completed forms to the school office (marked for the PTA) or scan the form and email back to us at email@example.com.
JOIN THE PTA COMMITTEE
We are a very small committee – we need more help!!
Please join us at the AGM, which will be held online on Tuesday 20th October, at 7.30pm. All welcome. Please come along to support our work and if you would like to put yourself forward to join our committee, we’d love to hear from you. We need more people on the committee, so please do consider it.
USE OUR SECONDHAND UNIFORM SERVICE
We sell secondhand blazers, ties and PE kit, at prices significantly lower than buying them new! You can email in requests to firstname.lastname@example.org We will check stock and if we have your requested items these will be bagged up and left at main reception for you. Many thanks to Clare O’Connell who ran this service for us last year, and to Ginette di Palma for offering to take over this term.

|Support us when you shop online|
We have registered with Easyfundraising, which means you can now raise free donations for the PTA when you shop online.
Easyfundraising has over 4,000 shops and sites, which will donate to us at no extra cost to yourself, including lots of big name retailers like John Lewis, Argos, Uswitch, eBay, M&S, Just Eat, Now TV, Domino's Pizza and Audible.
All you have to do is sign up to support us using this link: https://www.easyfundraising.org.uk/causes/twgsbpta/?utm_campaign=raise-more&utm_content=gs-e1. Then, every time you shop online, go through the Easyfundraising website or app and we’ll receive a % of your spend as a free donation, at no cost to you or us.
TWGSB PTA is now listed as an official charity on smile.amazon.co.uk.
If you shop on Amazon simply go to https://smile.amazon.co.uk/ch/1027114-0 and select Tunbridge Wells Grammar School for Boys Parent Teacher Association and shop as normal. Every time you then go to the Amazon site it will remind you to click on Smile Amazon.
Amazon will make a donation to the PTA every time you shop at no cost to yourself, so it’s an easy way to generate funds for the school, without even noticing it.
