TWGSB has a long history of involvement with the West Kent Young Enterprise (WKYE) programme. Students in Year 12 are invited every September to join WKYE.
The students decide on the company name, the product to be developed and sold, as well as all the other support activities, such as:
- writing a business plan
- setting up a bank account with our sponsors HSBC
- creating marketing material
- arranging finance
- keeping records
- purchasing raw materials
- and many more
Students are elected to roles such as Managing Director, Finance Director, Communications, HR etc. Any profits made at the end of the year are shared amongst the students. All aspects of running the YE Company replicate what happens in real life when setting up and running a real business.
Some of the activities the students take part in during the year are running a stall at the Christmas markets, a trade fair at the Royal Victoria Shopping Centre in Tunbridge Wells in January, a public speaking competition at the Rotary Club in Tonbridge and a finals night during April.
We have found that all our students enjoy YE and get fully involved. The students have the option to complete the OCR YE examination in May, which will earn extra UCAS points (20 for a pass, 30 for a merit and 40 for a distinction).
I would encourage all Year 12 students at TWGSB to get involved for a multitude of reasons − the fun, the life skills, enhancing the CV and earning extra UCAS points.
