We are very proud to announce that our Sociology Department has been awarded the “Best selective state school for boys” for Sociology at A-Level for the last two years (The Good Schools Guide Award).
Sociology examines the nature of societies with an objective and scientific approach. It focuses on contemporary British society, but there is ample opportunity to explore a variety of cross-cultural examples, and the way our society has developed historically. The subject highlights the structure of society by considering the role of its various institutions and the inequalities within it. This is an undoubtedly a subject which increases the students awareness of the society in which they live in and their place within it. This process of enlightenment often describes, as the development of the ‘Sociological imagination’ can be very exciting, but also challenging for students.
The aim of the Sociology department is for the teaching and learning environment to promote and foster independent learning which will enable the students their knowledge and understanding of Sociology and a critical awareness of society in general. Each lesson is delivered in a supportive environment and an open climate:
Sociology is offered at AS and A-Level. Topics covered at AS include Families and Households and Education and Sociological Research Methods. At A2 level we look at Beliefs in Society, Crime and Deviance, Theory and Methods
