Modern Foreign Languages

Ethos

  • to maintain and stimulate pupil interest, intellect and enjoyment in Modern Foreign Languages.
  • to create an atmosphere where pupils wish to learn, so that they come to enjoy Modern Foreign Languages, because they are active participants in it, and where staff enjoy teaching, so they give of their very best.
  • to enable each pupil to achieve his potential in a variety of situations, using all available resources appropriately, to ensure the highest level of achievement for each pupil.
  • to develop the ability to use the Modern Foreign Languages effectively for purposes of practical communication underpinned by correct grammar.
  • to enable pupils to be familiar with a body of knowledge, formal grammar, skills, linguistic techniques and vocabulary in the Modern Foreign Languages offered at this School.

Years 7-9
All pupils study French in Years 7, 8 and 9 and start to learn Spanish in Year 8 through to Year 9.

During Year 9 pupils are given the option to continue with both Languages in KS4, but they are must study at least one for GCSE. However, a significant number of boys chose to study both Languages for GCSE.

Years 10−13
In the last few years there has been a considerable improvement in the number of pupils achieving A* in GCSE results for both languages, most of whom have opted to continue studying Modern Languages in the Sixth Form.

Enrichment/Clubs
In addition to a whole host of extra-curricular activities conducted by various members of the department, Miss Allen organised a week’s stay in Madrid with a party of students from Year 10. Mr Matthews organised a week’s stay in Paris for year 7 pupils last June. Miss LeSeelleur has planned another Year 7 day trip to France for the Christmas markets and further residential visits to France and Spain will take place in 2009. We offer French and Spanish Clubs for years 7 to 11 during their lunchtime and an Italian Club for keen linguists in the sixth form.
