TWGSB 2ND X1 win Kent Cup and League Double

Tunbridge Wells Grammar School for Boys 2nd X1 won the Kent Cup v Dover Grammar School on Thursday 14th April at Larkfield and New Hythe F.C near Maidstone. TWGSB won 3-0, with goals from Ben Jacquin, Fabian Kommu and Max O’Neill.

Dover Grammar started  very strongly, putting immediate pressure on our back four with a constant bombardment of long balls, which was their main tactic throughout the game. TWGSB were unable to get out of their own half and had a very sluggish start to the match. However, our strong defence were able to repel these attacks and as the half wore on we began to put some  good passages of play together, and created a few  decent chances, the best of which was an excellent strike from our captain, Fabian Kommu who hit the crossbar after an excellent save from the Dover keeper. Eventually, the pressure told and the first goal came from another attack on the right, a quality cross from Luke Packman which resulted  in a sweetly struck shot by Ben Jacquin at the edge of the penalty box.

The second half started  very much like the first with more direct, long balls and sustained pressure from the Dover attack, without any real quality or clear cut chances. TWGSB relied on limited possession and expert defending, but produced several good opportunities on the counter attack. The  crucial second  goal came from an excellent free-kick  delivery by Frankie Storey and a powerful close range header from Fabian Kommu. TWGSB were now beginning to pass the ball with more conviction and retain possession better as the Dover team tired and a third goal sealed  the  game, another fine set piece delivery with Max O’Neill powering home a header from 6 yards.

This was an excellent achievement by the whole squad and caps off a tremendous season, which has resulted in winning the double of League and Cup and remaining unbeaten all season.

Well done to all the players, and many thanks to all Parents and colleagues who  supported the boys both in the final and since  September.
